Fatherhood has taught Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro many lessons. The actor, who shares Delilah, 6, with ex-girlfriend Kimberly Stewart, tells Us Weekly he has mastered the art of remaining “even-keeled” and “cool” even when his daughter “is throwing a tantrum.”

The Puerto Rico native revealed Delilah has also sharpened his negotiating skills. “I’ve learned it’s important to compromise,” Del Toro told Us at the New York City premiere of his thriller Sicario: Day of the Soldado on Monday, June 18.

Del Toro and the model, 38, welcomed Delilah in 2011. They were no longer dating when the child was born, but a source told Us at the time that the Traffic actor was at Stewart’s side in the delivery room and he vowed to play an active role in Delilah’s life.

Stewart, who is the daughter of rocker Rod Stewart, has described Delilah as “very opinionated” especially when it comes to fashion. As she told Australian website News.com in 2015: “She’ll look at me sometimes and she doesn’t need to say anything— she’ll just look at me and I just know that I’m wearing the wrong shoes or something.”

Meanwhile, Del Toro has spoken about the bond he shares with Kimberly’s father. “Who would have thought it? I told a friend from school and he goes, ‘Bro, if I told you, ‘I see in your future that you’ll go to Disneyland with Rod Stewart,’ you would have said, ‘No way,’’” he told Port magazine in 2015.

Del Toro teased that he and the 73-year-old Grammy winner are competitive. “I might pull the Oscar out to show to my daughter,” he quipped. “Grandpa has a lot of stuff, but he ain’t got one of those.”

Sicario: Day of the Soldado opens in theaters on June 29.
